Dress for Hurricane Success

Irene is on the minds of just about everyone in Fairfield and Westchester Counties, as millions await her unwelcome arrival. And while no one can say for sure how bad things will get, the word “evacuation” is on the lips of coastal town officials everywhere.

In the event that Irene really is our “big one,” being prepared is key. You can prepare your home, your garden, your pantry and your wardrobe for the wild weather on the way.

So, what should you pack just in case you need to leave in a hurry? In addition to water, flashlights, batteries and important documentation, there actually are some tips for packing clothes as well, and prepping your “go” bag in advance is the best place to start. Because let’s face it, no one packs well under pressure.

First, make sure you have all the necessary toiletries you and your family will need to stay clean. Hand sanitizers, wipes, and toothbrushes should be among the first items in your bag.

As for your wardrobe, make sure you pack plenty of undergarments, especially for your littlest evacuees who may be prone to “accidents.” If you’re relocating to a shelter or other community-oriented space, a washing machine will likely not be available. Pack at least three days’ worth of clean items.

Rain boots or other waterproof footwear are a must, as are closed-toe shoes. You don’t wear flip-flops to a hurricane.

And while our days have been gorgeously mild, our nights are getting cooler. Make sure to pack something warm for every family member.
