Don't Let Back Pain Leave you Flat

Those who have suffered from back pain know it can be excruciating and often incapacitating, but at least they can take solace in the fact that they're not alone. Eighty percent of Americans complain of back pain every year, making it among the most common reasons people visit the doctor or take off time from work.

"There's no question it can be debilitating," says Dr. Robert Brady, an orthopedic spine surgeon at Norwalk Hospital. It is also the chief complaint among patients. The good news, however, is that only a small percentage of his patients ultimately require surgical intervention in order to correct the problem. "We treat patients conservatively," he says, beginning with physical therapy. "And we'll progress from there with medications and injections, if necessary."

Along with Dr. Scott P. Sanderson, a neurosurgeon, Dr. Brady will be speaking about back pain, from its causes to its treatments, on Tuesday, May 24 at 7 p.m. in the Richard S. Perkin Auditorium of the hospital. The lecture, "Low Back Pain: Surgical and Non-Surgical Treatments," is free and features a question and answer session.
