If you think youre benefiting your engine and the environment by occasionally treating your car to an indulgent snack of premium gas, you are wrong, according to the government's fuel economy website.
In fact, most modern engines do not require premium gas (except of course if youre taking the Bentley out for a spin) and they don't benefit from "ingesting" it. Excess octane creates more pollution, so unless your owner's manual specifically calls for the use of premium gas, don't bother. Regular gas is less expensive and less harmful to the environment.
Just in case you'd like to know how the Environmental Protection Agency feels about it, here's what they have to say: "Unless your car needs high-octane gasoline, use of 'premium' gas will not improve performance or emissions -- it will just cost you more."
See? I wasn't kidding.
