Doc's Cafe May Sing its Swan Song

Yvonne Dougherty has been providing a morning wake up call to Westport residents at her Doc's Cafe for a decade. The airy shop, with its scattered sofas and tables, shelves of toys and coffee pots, serve-youself java station and the warm and charming Alex, who's been working for the owner for nearly six years, combine to create a bohemian rhapsody of daytime hospitality.

At Doc's (the name a play on the pronunciation of the owner's last name) you'll find a variety of baked goods like muffins and scones, pastries and bagels, as well as hot sandwiches, salads and other standard breakfast and lunch fare. There are also chocolates, smoothies, juices, and a wide selection of teas. The regulars pour in to the cafe daily, chatting with the high energy Dougherty while she scrambles to fix egg sandwiches. Understandably, she can get a bit overwhelmed, but her proprietor's pride and passion are clear.

If you've never visited Doc's, don't wait. The building in which this community hub is housed is slated for demolition as part of a major construction project that's already underway along this strip of the Saugatuck River. Dougherty says she hopes to find a new location nearby prior to the project's start, which could come within the year. "But it won't be the same," laments Alex. "This is such a wonderful space and I'm missing it already."
