“In the beginning, I wore all the hats,” says Mern of her 12-year tenure at Double Exposure in Darien. “But now, my staff are my ambassadors. It’s a collaborative effort. It’s a marketplace. And it’s a store where customers can shop and expect assistance in finding the perfect piece, whatever the occasion.”

Prada, Gucci, Chanel, Manolo Blahnik -- she has every designer you’re looking for, including couture, some with retail tags still attached.

“Organization is key,” she says. “Getting everything arranged by size, color, purpose -- it takes work. But it makes the shopping easier.” Mern and her staff have organization down, because shopping at Double Exposure is a breeze. Even the fitting rooms are outfitted with ideas on how to achieve the latest looks. She doesn’t miss a thing.

Mern approaches her business from 21st Century perspective of renewal. “It’s so great when someone comes in with a piece for sale that, for whatever reason, she just can’t use. So we put it on the floor. Eventually, the woman for whom that piece is simply perfect walks through the door. The piece gets a second chance.”

She’s also a champion of female entrepreneurs. You’ll find wares from local women on her shelves. “I like the idea of being a champion for the cottage-industry woman.”
