Diesel Fuel Cleans up its Act

There’s nothing quite like the smell of diesel fuel. Disgusting? It used to be. But diesel has finally come clean, which is good news for people who have to breathe the air, as well those who manufacture and buy diesel-fueled vehicles.

Diesel fuel now contains 97 percent less sulfur (a stinky and environmentally unfriendly contaminant) than it used to. And the improved fuel also reduces emissions from diesel engines, including soot and nitrogen oxides. And according to The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), this change alone is the "single greatest achievement in clean fuel since lead was removed from gasoline a generation ago."

The improved diesel fuel will not only allow cleaner diesel engines to be brought to market, it also reduces pollutants associated with older (dirtier) engines.

How will you know if your local gas station is selling the newer better fuel? Those pumps containing it have big green labels stamped on them, stating their low-sulfur status. It doesn’t get simpler than that.
