Daily Weigh-Ins Serve Up Reality Checks

It sits there in the corner of your bathroom, begging for your attention. But too often you pay it no heed. Maybe it’s time you did so. A study from the University of Minnesota suggests that women who regularly weigh themselves are no more likely to suffer from depression than those who avoid the scale.

The yearlong study took into account the frequency of weigh-ins, body mass index and mental health status of 4,600 women between the ages of 40 and 65 in Seattle. Not only was frequent scale monitoring linked to an absence of depressive symptoms, it was also linked to an 8 percent lower BMI as well.

The results reinforce research by the National Weight Control Registry, which tracked more than 5,000 dieters over a decade to find common keys to weight loss. Among them was stepping on the scale daily.

The key element in the study is confronting reality: When people delude themselves about weight, activity level or calorie intake, it is inevitable that they will gain weight.
