Cook Up Some Fun

Cooking with your kids is a great way to inspire a lifelong love affair with good food. The more they handle the ingredients and become involved in the preparation, the more invested they are in the outcome. The more invested they are in the outcome; the more likely they are to eat it!

One of my favorite ways to incorporate my own kiddo into the culinary fun is making homemade pizza. It’s a little messy, but big fun in the kitchen usually is.

What you’ll need:

Flour

Olive oil (to grease the pan)

Premade pizza dough (available in bags at most area supermarkets)

Marinara sauce (or sauce of your choosing)

Mozzarella cheese (unless you prefer another soft, low-moisture cheese)

Toppings of your choice (we dig on pepperoni, asparagus and cherry tomatoes)

Let your kids go to town, pounding the floured dough, rolling it out, tossing it in the air. Help the littlest ones shape the dough on the pan, then, let them apply each layer of ingredients. They’ll be thrilled to help, and proud of their work.

Cook your pipsqueak’s pie at a high temperature, at least 375° Fahrenheit. You’ll know it’s done when the crust turns golden.

Then you can kick back with a glass of wine and marvel at the fact that your kids are actually eating a dinner they prepared.

The next frontier: making loading the dishwasher fun.
