Picking the perfect countertop for a kitchen or bathroom is a daunting task. You want something a little different -- a surface that will make a statement. And though youve looked at slab after slab of granite and marble, nothing youve seen inspires you.
Enter Jeff Kuryluk. After a career in the theater, Jeff and his wife Jennifer moved to Fairfield. Jeff got to work renovating their new home using skills hed learned working on theater sets. In the theater everyone does everything, he says. You figure things out as you go. All went well until it came to the kitchen, as Jennifer didnt like granite.
Casting around for an alternative, Jeff came up with the idea of creating a concrete counter. He figured if worst came to worst, Id dig a big hole in the garden and bury it. But the counter was a smash hit and Concrete Encounter was born.
Concrete Encounter makes more than just kitchen slabs. In the spec house he is building in Fairfield, Jeff designed and built a concrete mantelpiece and hearth that are dead ringers for limestone. The curb in the master bathroom shower is also concrete, but youd never know it wasnt stone. The concrete kitchen and bathroom counters are being installed soon. I can make counters in 1,500 different colors, Jeff says, adding he can inlay designs or objects, such as shells or glass, in the counters.
Maintenance is similar to that of natural stone. Concrete is polished and sealed, and Jeff recommends resealing the surface every few years. The options are endless because each counter is designed exactly the way you want it. And just like in the theatre, where no two performances are the same, nobody else will have a counter exactly like yours.
