Cobble It Together

What do you need to keep your shoes and boots looking straight-out-of-the-box good? Apart from a light step, you’ll need a skilled shoe repair shop to get real mileage out of those Manolos.

Almost anyone will tell you that one of the area’s best shoe doctors is Rick Masone, the proprietor of M&M Shoe Repair in Westport. After 40 years in business, it’s hard to think of anyone more qualified to nurse those Louboutins back to life.

“I can resole in red, sure,” says Rick, as he’s putting a new heel on a Prada pump. “I do everything by hand. I have about 10 tools, and they’re the same 10 tools I’ve been working with my whole career.”

After all this time, it doesn’t seem that much has changed.

“Well, shoes aren’t made as well as they used to be. People kind of just wear them out and then throw them away.” But that kind of disposable lifestyle is so 20th Century. Real fashion-forward thinkers know that longevity is always in style.

Rick shares the lower floor of 265 Riverside Avenue with another Westport institution, J&R’s Hot Dog Stand. “I like my neighbors,” Rick says. “I eat there once or twice a week. But mostly I bring my lunch. I’m trying to watch my figure,” he laughs.

Your figure is up to you, but Rick will work some serious magic on all your footwear. Find M M Shoe Repair at 265 Riverside Avenue in Westport, or call him at 203-209-4650.
