Choose a Greener Daycare Facility

Is your daycare center green and healthy? Reducing children's exposure to toxins in the environment can have a huge impact on their health and development. Answer the following questions to determine if your daycare facility is moving in a green direction.

Are cars or other vehicles prohibited from idling near the facility?

Is smoking prohibited everywhere on the premises or in sight of children?

Are environmentally preferable, certified green cleaning products used?

Are non-aerosol only products used?

Are areas dusted, mopped and vacuumed regularly to minimize dust?

Are there walk-off mats at all the entrances to your facility?

Are digital thermometers used instead of mercury-containing thermometers?

Are all used batteries, fluorescent and compact fluorescent light bulbs securely stored and recycled?

Are rugs vacuumed daily using a vacuum with a HEPA filter?

Are only glass or microwave safe ceramic dishes used to heat food in the microwave?

Is garbage covered at all times to avoid attracting pests and minimize odors?

Are non-toxic techniques used both inside and outside the facility to prevent and control pests (insects and weeds)?

Is adequate ventilation maintained? (There should be no stale or musty smell.)

Are water leaks repaired promptly?

Are only lead-free and PVC-free toys used? Toys made out of soft plastic should be avoided.

Is playground equipment made from non-pressure treated wood or other materials?

Is all eligible material -- paper, cardboard, glass and plastic bottles -- recycled?

Are stuffed animals washed regularly?

Are scented products such as perfumes and air fresheners used?

Is clutter kept to a minimum and toys stored in enclosed containers?
