Celebrate Social Support in July

July might hold the promise of days at the beach and nights lit by fireworks, but it is also a time to reflect on your social life. Social Wellness Month begins July 1.

According to self-help website Words of Wellness, social wellness relates to having positive interactions with and enjoying being with others, as well as feeling comfort and ease during work and leisure situations and communicating feelings and needs to others.

Social wellness facts:

~ Socially isolated people are more susceptible to illness and have a death rate two to three times higher than those who are not socially isolated.

~ Those who maintain social network and support systems are likely to endure stress better than those who are alone.

~ Cholesterol levels rise when human companionship is lacking.

~ Warm, close friendships cause higher levels of immunoglobulin A (an antibody that helps stave off respiratory infections and cavities).

~ A strong social network can create a good mood and enhance self-esteem.

So, go to that barbeque. And take a friend along with you.
