Celebrate Cinco de Mayo in Style

Looking for a local hot spot to get your Cinco de Mayo on? Well, Fairfield County, you’re in luck, because there are plenty of cucinas around our towns where you can find fresh guacamole and indulge in a tangy margarita to celebrate General Zaragoza’s Mexican 1862 military victory over French troops at the Battle of Puebla.

Here’s my short list of grande fun for Cinco de Mayo:

Tequila Mockingbird, 6 Forest St., New Canaan – This eclectic, eccentric restaurant is a colorful jumble of south of the border style. The menu is tailor made for lovers of Mexican cuisine. Don’t miss the carne asada. It will have you shouting, “Olé!”

Viva Zapata, 530 Riverside Ave., Westport – There’s no denying that Viva Zapata’s biggest draw in warmer months is their expansive outdoor patio. Their signature margaritas served in generous Ball jars are a close second. If you’re looking for a party this May 5, you’ll find it here. Plus, they’ll be serving samples of their Mexican fare with an America twist.

Villa del Sol, 35 Elm St., Westport – This is a family-friendly Mexican cucina in the heart of downtown Westport. And this Cinco de Mayo, they’ll be serving up free tequila and t-shirts to Cinco de Mayo revelers.

Boxcar Cantina, 44 Old Field Point Road, Greenwich – You haven’t tasted guacamole until you’ve sampled Boxcar’s. Avocado doesn't get fresher. They’ll be pouring their signature General Zaragoza margarita, a potent frozen concoction,  as it's the day’s drink special. Don’t miss their Cinco Sampler appetizer offering.

Red Lulu, 128 Washington St., Norwalk – Red Lulu is Norwalk’s best bet for a salsa-infused fiesta. And this Cinco de Mayo they promise not to disappoint. Complimentary hors d’oeuvres, pop-up taco stands and a live DJ will help you get into the mood.
