Summer is a great time to fill cracks in the outside of your house. The caulk between window and doorframes and the siding of your house dries up over time, creating gaps. Mice and insects can get into your house through the tiniest spaces. Hot air will find its way in, too.
Here's what you need to know to seal all the joints in your house.
Scrape out the old sealant with a utility knife.
Use a caulking gun to fill the space with flexible polyurethane caulk. This Old House recommends smoothing out the bead of caulk with the back of a spoon. You can also use a damp rag over your forefinger.
After you've sealed the doors and windows, check for cracks around any other openings, such as utility lines and outdoor faucets.
Unless you're used to working on a ladder, hire a professional to tackle the second or third floor windows.
