Build Raised Beds Over Your Rocks

I am so excited to see the grass on my lawn again! That means it’s almost time to get out and start gardening. If you don’t yet have a garden, this is the perfect time to start planning. Decide where you want to plant flowers, find the sunniest spot for your vegetable or kitchen garden and start ordering seeds.

I’ve recently changed the way I garden – and I wish I’d thought of it sooner. The hours I wasted digging through our rock-hard Connecticut soil! And where do all those stones come from every year? Now I’ve become a raised bed gardener and my body is so much happier. No more kneeling on sore knees and fewer backaches, too.

Building a raised bed is easy. You can do it yourself with lumber from your local lumberyard or you can order a kit from most gardening catalogs. And Home Depot has a selection of raised beds at decent prices in their garden center. A raised bed is basically just a box without a bottom. Once you’ve built the frame, plop it on the ground, even over a lawn, and roll out some weed barrier fabric to cover the ground. Make your own perfect soil from a mix of peat moss, organic soil and composted manure. Dump it in your raised bed and your garden will be ready for a fruitful season of flowers, herbs and vegetables. And your knees will thank you forever.
