Brew News: Ginger Man Hoists Swiss Suds

The Ginger Man in South Norwalk is frosting up its mugs in preparation for a couple of exciting, upcoming events. Monday, May 24, the restaurant continues its series of monthly beer-pairing dinners with the brewmaster from Weyerbacher Brewing Company of Easton, Pennsylvania as the featured guest. Bob Fauteux will discuss the relative merits and unique traits of his company's Verboten, Merry Monks, Old Heathen, Hops Infusion and Insanity labels while guests enjoy a five-course menu designed specifically to accompany the innate flavors of each beer. The cost for the dinner is $70 and is inclusive of tax and gratuity as well as the full meal and beer accompaniment with each course.

Also on tap is an opportunity to sample a very special Swiss draft slated for arrival at The Ginger Man on Thursday, June 3. "We're very lucky to have gotten our hands on a special cask from the Brasserie des Franches-Montagnes (BFM)," said owner Christian Burns. "For those seeking an elusive and truly singular beer experience, this is a big deal."

The Cuvee Alex le Rouge Jurassian Imperial Stout is brewed with black pepper, vanilla, and tea. While the restaurant has carried the brand by the bottle, Burns says that nothing compares to the flavor of a straight-from-the-barrel pour of this particular blend and he insists that the cask won't last long.

The Ginger Man, arguably the most comprehensive beer tavern in Fairfield County, carries 52 drafts, over 125 bottle selections, and one featured, hand-pulled cask offering. Beyond catering to established officionados, the management here seeks to expand the horizons of those whose notion of a "cold one" stops at Amstel Light. The subtleties and nuances proffered by varying wheat, malt, barley, and hops as well as the divergent methods with which brewmasters blend and brew them make beer as fascinating a culinary partner as wine. The Ginger Man is located at 99 Washington Street.
