Breathe Easier at Home

You worry about the quality of the air outside, but you might want to consider what you're breathing in at home, too. "How to Beat Indoor Air Pollution" is the topic of the next Green Homes seminar at the Maritime Aquarium in Norwalk.  This is a subject deserving of your attention. Indoor air pollution has been linked to everything from asthma to cancer, with a wide range of contaminants to blame: Toxic gases, mold, dust mites, bacteria, and more. Even worse, symptoms will get worse before they get better (if they get better, that is), as there's no way of building up a tolerance to these offensive substances. Repeated exposures can cause sufferers to become sensitized to biological and chemical pollutants. Once sensitized, ever smaller amounts can continue to cause health damage. Long-term effects include respiratory and heart diseases.

Luckily there are ways to keep the currents fresh in your home, and you can learn about them from guest speakers Dr. MaryBeth Smuts, an air toxicologist for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Dr. Gary Ginsberg, a toxicologist for the Connecticut Department of Public Health and Foster Lyons, a building-science expert and co-owner of Coastal Point Construction, LLC, in Cos Cob. Homeowners, architects, builders and contractors alike are invited to find out more about concepts like moisture control, pressurization and air movement. Audience questions about specific problems are encouraged. Tonight, 7 to 9 p.m., $10 in advance, $15 at the door. Snacks, beer and wine are included. Make reservations at 203-852-0700 ext. 2206.
