Bone up on Tips for Healthy Bones

Pop quiz: What do cauliflower, broccoli, bok choy, parsley, kale, brussel sprouts and mustard greens have in common? (Hint: the answer is not, "They are all flavors of ice cream I will never eat.") In fact, their commonality is that they are all "super plants."

At a discussion Wednesday, June 15, at the Blum Center for Health in Rye Brook, NY, chronic disease specialist Susan Blum, M.D. will explain how, ounce for ounce, "super" plant foods contain almost twice as much calcium as dairy based foods. She will be joined by bone and nutrition expert and author Annemarie Colbin, PhD, founder and director of the Natural Gourmet Cooking School and Chef Training Program in New York City. They will talk about eating healthfully, as well as provide "bone-building" recipes and tips on how to make smarter food choices to help prevent and treat osteoporosis.

Dr. Blum has some suggestions for building healthy bones. "Despite what many people think, dairy products are not one of the main ingredients for strong bones. Although the dairy industry may want us to think osteoporosis is a 'dairy deficiency disease,' this is just not true. Once they are digested and absorbed, milk, cheese and yogurt create an acidic environment in the body. And while we need acid in our stomach, we do not want an acid environment in our tissues. All our enzymes, including those in the bones, thrive in a more alkaline environment."

She also recommends staying away from antacids, which actually reduce acid so much that they prevent adequate sodium absorption. Additionally, Dr. Blum suggests having Vitamin D levels checked, to minimize stress and to exercise regularly in order to keep bones strong and healthy.

Dr. Blum is a resident of Armonk, NY. She is Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Preventive Medicine at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine and is on staff at Greenwich Hospital as an Integrative Medicine Specialist in the Medicine Department. She is also a member of the Senior Teaching Faculty at the Center for Mind-Body Medicine in Washington, D.C. and teaches throughout the country in their training programs.
