Bluemercury Brings Spa Experience to New Canaan

NEW CANAAN, Conn. - Area beauty mavens know that Bluemercury, the purveyor of prettying potions, scents and makeup, is a go-to boutique when you need to put your best face forward.

But did you know that Fairfield County’s newest Bluemercury, located in New Canaan, also offers a full menu of spa services?

Walking into the New Canaan store is a familiar Bluemercury experience. The space is bright, the shelves are lined with luxury skin care and makeup products, the staff is friendly and the store smells wonderful. At the back, however, there’s a frosted glass door that bears the word “spa” in the familiar Bluemercury font.

Move through this door, and you are transported to a quiet, dimly lit mini-sanctuary where expert Bluemercury aesthetician, Alexandra Salcido, waits for you.

“The original Bluemercury began as a spa,” says Salcido. “But this is the first Bluemercury in Fairfield County to incorporate spa services. In fact, the New Canaan Bluemercury spa offers a full list of services, including glycolic peels, microdermabrasion, vitamin oxygen blasts and waxing. Soon, the spa will add massage services to the list of pampering possibilities it offers its clients.

“I always begin with a basic skin analysis,” explains Salcido as I slide into the comfortable spa bed. She carefully removes my makeup and covers my eyes with cool damp cloth before she begins listing the small flaws she sees with her trained eye. “Some discoloration, some clogged pores,” she muses, delicately turning my chin to one side to get a better look. “Nothing we can’t fix.”

Over the next hour, Salcido worked deftly and silently, cleansing my pores, exfoliating, softening and rehydrating my skin. “The skin is the largest organ in the body,” Salicido reminds me. “And oxygen leaves through your skin regularly. Doing an oxygen blast helps to return some oxygen to the skin, which brightens and plumps.”

In Salcido’s care, I became so relaxed, I found myself drifting off to sleep. “Most people do,” says Salcido.

After my treatments were finished, it took a few minutes and a glass of water for me to get focused again. My skin was bright, taught and felt incredibly clean. In a word, my skin actually felt younger.

Reinvigorated, I stepped out into the boutique again and placed myself in the care of experienced makeup artist, Clay Priest. Priest pulled out his best brushes and got to work.

“I always do eyes first,” Priest explains, “And face last. That way, I can just wipe away any shadow or anything without smudging.”

Priest walked me through the best way to create a dramatic cat eye for my particular eye shape, showing me what he was doing in the mirror and encouraging me to try on my own.

By the time I walked out of Bluemercury’s new boutique and spa in New Canaan, I looked as great as I felt. Even my five-year-old daughter noticed. “Wow, mama,” she said, wide-eyed and touching my cheek. “You look beautiful. How did they do it?”

Bluemercury is located at 120 Main St. in New Canaan.
