Beauty Maven Nicky Kinnaird Shares Summertime Tips With Fairfield County Shoppers

NEW CANAAN, Conn. – We are all looking forward to a little fun in the summer sun. But a healthy dose of warmer weather can also render your usual beauty routine ineffectual at best.

Space NK Apothecary founder and beauty expert, Nicky Kinnard, shared her latest tips and product recommendations for sublime summer skin during a recent stateside visit to her New Canaan shop.

“The most important thing is that you get lightweight hydration during the warmer months,” says Kinnaird, the picture of effortless, easy and refreshingly natural beauty herself. “You want to look for ingredients like hyaluronic acid that penetrate deep down into the base of the skin cell layers. You don’t want heavy textures on the skin when it’s hot outside, even when it comes to your moisturizer.” For summertime moisture, Kinnaird recommends Bakel’s P-Lipic syrum.

Kinnaird also recommends lightening up on makeup during the warmer months. “Go for a tinted moisturizer, rather than a heavy foundation. By Terry has recently introduced ‘Sheer Expert,’ which I personally love for summer. It provides just a little more coverage than a tinted moisturizer, but you can see the luminescence. It makes skin look as if it’s blooming. And this one won’t slip off when it gets super humid.”

If you’re looking for a faux bronze tint that passes the summertime test, Kinnaird recommends the By Terry bronzing fluid. “I think it looks much more natural than bronzing powder.”

But how’s a girl supposed to keep her make-up in place during those sticky summer days?

“Sometimes you’ll find that, by lunchtime, either your eyeliner has moved up and settled into the crease of your eyelid,” says Kinnaird. “By Terry’s eye primer is actually hyaluronic whipped up with a little bit of tint. You can use it as a concealer and it cuts any redness out of the eyelid. You can wear your eyeliner on top of this and it will never migrate up the lid.”

Kinnaird also recommends mascara by Kevyn Aucoin. “He uses the Japanese tubing formula which actually shrinkwraps the lashes. When you when want to remove it you just splash your face with warm water and rub your lashes gently and it just comes away like little spiders legs.  But, you could do a bikram yoga class in this and as long as you don’t rub your eyes, it will just stay in place. You never have to worry about smudging or flaking under the eyelashes.”

For lips, Kinnarid likes Liptropolis by Poppy King. “It’s actually a trio of lipsticks inspired by shades she’s seen ladies in Manhattan wearing.” The lip color kit consists of a peachy nude, a melon coral and a wonderfully wearable red called SoHo. “It’s really your perfect palette for summer months.”

With skin well-hydrated and make-up looking fresh, Kinnaird recommends a light fragrance as the finishing touch.

“Summer is the time to lighten your fragrance,” she says. “We actually have a beautiful new fragrance we’ve created with the help of world-renowned perfumer, Azzi Glasser, called In Peace. Ten percent of the net profits from this fragrance will benefit Women for Women,” she says.

Women for Women is an international organization dedicated to helping women in war ravaged regions. Since 1993, the organization has invested in more than 300,000 women in countries like Afghanistan, Iraq, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Nigeria, Rwanda and South Sudan.

“Some of these women have lost absolutely everything,” says Kinnaird. “So it’s about helping them get back on their feet through education and helping to build new communities. Every 44 bottles we sell will pay for one woman’s education for an entire year. It’s a way we can make a tangible difference. And what’s more, the fragrance really smells amazing for the summer.”
