Be Smart - Prevent Plumbing Nightmares

Have you taken your Water Management System for granted recently? “And just what the heck is that because I don’t think I have one?” I hear you say.  Well, if you live in Fairfield County the chances are pretty much 100% that you do have one, but you probably know it by its pedestrian name – The Plumbing. And your friendly local plumber, like Steve Miller of Miller Plumbing in Norwalk, is likely the first number on your “Emergency Phone Numbers” list.

The plumbing isn’t typically part of the conversational repertoire --  until something goes wrong.  Haven’t we all been bored stiff by other people’s nightmare tales of leaks and floods?  It’s always a story filled with angst and rage, and major inconvenience and cost.  The sad thing is that most plumbing misadventures are easily preventable.  Here’s how:

*  You should run periodic checks for water leaks.  Turn off all the faucets and then go to your water heater. If you hear running water, something’s leaking.

*  If you have a garbage disposal in the kitchen sink, run the water and put small amounts of food down it. Better yet, stop using the disposal and start composting! A much better environmental solution than grinding your garbage and sending it to the sewage system.

*  NEVER pour used oil or grease down the sink.  It turns into a sticky goo and will clog the pipes.

*  If you have large trees and shrubs growing near your house the roots can find their way into your plumbing system, especially during periods of drought. Dissolve half a cup of salt in the sink and then drain – this should discourage the roots.

*  With winter approaching, have your heating system checked.  If you have a heat pump in the attic, make sure there is anti-freeze in the system so your pipes don’t freeze.
