Battle of the Belles Features Strong Belles

Strong women lift some outrageously heavy things -- and compete to become the Belle of the "Battle of the Belle" -- for a good cause, at Punch Kettlebell Gym of Norwalk, Sunday, Oct. 23.

The gym, located at 345 Main Ave in Norwalk, will host the “Battle of the Belles II,” its second annual strongwoman competition. The event will feature some of Punch's standout females, and will raise funds for the Carl & Dorothy Bennett Cancer Center at the Stamford Hospital.

“We felt a strongwoman competition was an ideal way to highlight the inherent strengths – both mental and physical – that women possess,” says Stefanie Tropea, head trainer and co-owner of Punch Kettlebell Gym of Norwalk. “Last year's event was a huge success in raising proceeds for the Bennett Cancer Center, and we are expecting this year to be even bigger.”

Tropea says that while people might not typically associate strongman events with females, there is a growing number of women making names for themselves in the sport. She says with the proper technique and training, women of all shapes and sizes can master the art of lifting heavy things – and lifting them safely.

“Strongman training empowers women to challenge their bodies and personal fitness goals,” says Tropea. “It’s a fitting metaphor for the battle many women face when they’re diagnosed with breast cancer.”

Participation in the event is reserved for female members of Punch Kettlebell Gym of Norwalk, but the public is encouraged to attend and view the competition. The competition kicks off promptly at 10 a.m.
