Back-to-School Shopping Becomes Less Taxing

Tax-free shopping week starts Sunday, Aug. 21, which makes it the perfect time to shop for back-to-school. Clothes and shoes under $300 per item will be exempt from Connecticut’s new 6.35 percent sales tax.

With the current economic climate trending toward stormy weather, this is welcome news to parents on a budget. Kevin B. Sullivan, the Revenue Services Commissioner, thinks the tax breaks will go the distance with shoppers. "This is a great opportunity for back-to-school shoppers,” Sullivan said in a press release.  “We expect it to be a big hit this year. It's also a good way to help Connecticut's retailers attract customers and put more money back into the state economy.”

There’s no limit on the number of tax-free items you can purchase. As long as each piece clocks in at under $300, you’ll be able to skip the tax throughout the state until Aug. 27.

And, a quick drive across the border will translate into back-to-school savings for Westchester County parents as well. Currently, New York State has no tax-free shopping week on the roster.

So snag the Hunter rain boots now while the sun is still shining and the tax man is on vacation. At least in Connecticut.
