Are Plows to Blame for Decapitated Mailboxes?

Has your mailbox been decapitated by a snowplow? It’s one of the most annoying aspects in the aftermath of a snowstorm. Without a mailbox at the regulation height, the mailman will not deliver mail to your home. You'll have to go to your local post office to collect it.

Snowplows are notorious for taking no prisoners. Driveway aprons, fences, stonewalls and lawns can also get beaten up by the plows. As can vehicles left on the street.

Norwalk residents who think their property has been damaged by a city plow have a resource. They should call the city’s customer service hotline at (203) 854-3200 to lodge a complaint. “We get a lot of calls from residents at this time of year,” a spokesman at the department said. “Mailboxes are usually pushed over by the snow and not the plow, but we know if one of our plows was on that street,”

Residents who still feel that the city plow was to blame should call and discuss the problem with the helpful staff at City Hall. “We will send out a foreman to check the damage” the spokesman went on. “The foreman can tell from a quick visual inspection if paint traces on the damaged property come from Norwalk plows. City plows are painted a distinctive color so it’s easy to tell.” And if the damage was indeed caused by a city plow, the Department of Public Works will make sure they patch things up for you.
