Architectural Historian to Lecture on Newport Gems

History and architecture buffs are in for a treat on Nov. 9, when John Tschirch, an architectural historian with The Preservation Society of Newport County, comes to the Lockwood-Mathews Mansion in Norwalk to talk about two Newport, R.I. architectural masterpieces, Chateau-sur-Mer (1852) and the Isaac Bell House (1853). The two mansions are examples of the design and architecture of the period.

Chateau-sur-Mer was re-designed in the 1870s by Richard Morris Hunt. It features stenciling, Florentine leatherwork and wallpapers from the aesthetic movement.

The Isaac Bell House is a masterpiece of the American shingle style and reflects the experimental nature of McKim, Mead and White's early work, with its careful blending of fusion of design elements from historical and exotic sources.

John Tschirch specializes in the evolution of historic houses. He has developed research and educational programs for the Preservation Society's historic houses and landscapes and serves as an advisor on architectural and landscape restoration projects.

The lecture starts at 11 a.m. and will be followed by a luncheon. It is co-sponsored by the New Canaan Preservation Alliance, Inc. For tickets ($25 non-members and $20 members) call 203-838-9799, ext. 4.
