Analyzing Our Food for Earth Week

The Norwalk Community College Chapter of the Student World Assembly will celebrate Earth Week from April 18-23 on the college’s Norwalk campus. Among a host of activities designed to examine sustainability are two special events related to food. Both are free and open to the public.

If you’re a food fan who hasn’t yet seen Food, Inc., brace yourself. The information brought to light in this documentary could very well change the way you eat forever. The film lifts the veil on our nation’s food industry, exposing the highly mechanized processes and questionable practices being utilized in the meat and dairy industries in particular. Nominated for an Academy Award for best documentary, this is a must-see for anyone whose interest in food goes beyond discovering the next great restaurant. The viewing and a discussion to follow will be held Tuesday, April 20 in the GenRe Forum from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Also in the GenRe Forum, national best-selling author Anna Lappé will discuss her work in the field of sustainable food systems on Wednesday, April 21 from 10:00 to 11:15 a.m. Lappé’s most recent work,  Diet for a Hot Planet: The Climate Crisis at the End of Your Fork and What You Can Do About it, has been called “impeccable, informative and inspiring” by Booklist. Named to Time magazine’s list of “Who’s Who” in the eco category, she is the co-founder of the Small Planet Institute and Small Planet Fund. Her partner in the venture is her mother, author Frances Moore Lappé, author of the seminal book, Diet for a Small Planet. The institute is designed to further what the mother and daughter see as an historic transition and worldwide shift from the dominant, failing notion of democracy toward “democracy as a rewarding way of life.” Their mission is to create a culture in which citizens “infuse the values of inclusion, fairness and mutual accountability into all dimensions of public life.” Check out www.smallplanetinstitute.org for more information and head to NCC to see Lappe’s fascinating presentation.
