American Drivers Hit the Road in Force

How many miles did you drive last year? While the average American driver clocks some 12,000 to 15,000 miles per year, American drivers blazed a trail of just over 2.9 trillion miles in 2010, according to the Department of Transportation.

DOT estimates a 20.5 billion-mile increase over 2009, the highest spike in mileage since 2007. And while the area between Delaware and Florida saw a decrease of 214 million miles off the annual total, cars on roads between Texas and Kentucky increased to 46.6 billion miles.

Despite the increase of miles driven by American drivers, traffic fatalities in 2010 were at their lowest rate since 1950.

With gas prices making a steady march to $5 per gallon this summer, one wonders what 2011's total mileage will be. Check here one year from now for the tally.
