Adventurous Entrepreneur Settles in Stamford

David Gooding is a man with a keen eye for beauty – and a keen sense of humor. Just look at the Juliska website. Feast your eyes on the exquisite tableware and glasses that his company designs and sells. And then read the "Almost Factual" page. It will make you smile.

The story of how David, an Englishman from Surrey, ended up living on Shippan Point in Stamford with his wife Capucine and three little girls, Lily, Bliss and Daisy, is full dramatic plot twists. He was 18 when his parents moved to Boston and he decided to tag along for the adventure of living in the U.S. He went to Hobart College in upstate New York then spent a year working for Mackenzie-Childs, a company specializing in funky painted tableware and furniture.

In the meantime, his parents and future in-laws plotted to pair their children off, even though the two hadn’t met. “I finally agreed to meet Capucine for lunch in New York,” says David. He was smitten and became, as he puts it, “something of a stalker.” Fast forward a couple of years and the couple, now married, were in Paris on a flea market jaunt when they spotted a set of beautiful glasses. “They were decorated with threads and berries,” David says. “The company that made them had found old molds going back centuries, and started making these stunning glasses.”

Today David and Capucine design and produce a whole array of stunning glasses, which are mouth-blown by artisans in the Czech Republic. The threads and berries, their signature design, also run through the ceramic plates and dishes that are made from heat, cold and chip resistant Portuguese stoneware in six pastels. You’ll find Juliska in the finest stores in the country, but luckily for us the flagship store is right on Canal Street in Stamford. And soon we’ll have even more. Juliska is opening an outlet for seconds and overstock right next door. Check back here for more news.
