Acqua Aces Lunch

It’s cold. You’re on Main Street, searching for a last minute something for someone special. Then, it happens. Hunger strikes. Where to refuel?

Westport’s Acqua Ristorante is a cozy spot to warm up on a winter afternoon. The warm, continental-style interior welcomes, and the express menu offered in the downstairs café means your lunch can be quick and delicious. The two course meal also gives your wallet a break from all that spending, clocking in at just $13.95.

On my recent visit, the soup du jour was a creamy tomato and white bean purée, which paired perfectly with the warm focaccia bread they brought to the table. Served in a cup-sized bowl, it was just the appetizer I needed to satiate my bargain hunting-induced appetite.

For my second course, I opted for the Ladies-Who-Lunch style grilled chicken salad. The herbed chicken breast was served warm and over a generous bed of greens. Black olives, chick peas, cucumber, grape tomatoes and feta cheese turned the standard salad into a sublime luncheon. It was delicious.

But, I confess to having entrée envy.

My friend ordered the homemade gnocchi. The plate was perfectly portioned for lunch. Not too much, but just enough to satisfy, and to share. Small balls of mozzarella dotted the dish like marshmallows in a cup of hot cocoa. Fresh basil made every bite pop. Or at least the several bites I stole. And the sauce was so good that my friend of Italian pedigree said several times that it rivaled his grandfather’s homemade tomato sauce.

Coming from an Italian, there’s no higher compliment.

Our stop at Westport’s Acqua was a delightful, relaxing compliment to an intense afternoon of holiday shopping. As affordable as it was delicious, I’d say it will also make a great January destination while making those returns and exchanges on Main Street.

Acqua is located at 43 Main Street, in Westport.
