A Few Tips Ensure a Smooth Trip

Is a summer road trip just around the bend? Keep in mind a few essential tips before you go to avoid an unexpected call to AAA or a trip to the mechanic.

? Consider a quick tuneup for your vehicle before actually hitting the road, particularly if it's between service appointments.

? Check the oil stick after running the car a few minutes: It should have sufficient levels of fluid that appear clean. If the oil contains sludgy deposits or dirt particles, it might be time for an oil change.

? Keep tires inflated to the proper pressure: Not only will this improve fuel economy, it also ensures the car will handle optimally in emergency maneuvers.

? Check wiper blades: Making a small investment in new blades can help visibility during and after rain. According to yahooauto.com, blades should be changed every six to 12 months, as rubber deteriorates with age.? Clean the car of clutter: The more extraneous weight it's hauling, the more it can cost, as added pounds reduce mileage.

? Buckle up all passengers, even those of the four-legged variety: Loose animals can be a distraction and they also can get hurt or cause injury to passengers in the event of a minor collision.? Be prepared: The Boy Scouts make a good point. Keep an emergency kit in the trunk. Amazon.com sells an Adventurer Road Assistance Kit for $55 that includes jumper cables, air compressor, tools and a first-aid kit. And while you're packing, it's always a good idea to have a flashlight (with new batteries) and a wool or fleece blanket (not cotton, which absorbs moisture).
