30 Million Americans Admit to Driving Drunk

According to a new study conducted by SAMHSA (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration), some 30 million American people admit to driving while under the influence of alcohol. Additionally, 10 million Americans admit to driving while under the influence of illegal drugs.

SAMHSA statistics indicate that approximately 13 percent of Americans 16 and older years drove under the influence of alcohol over the last 12 months, and some 4 percent drove while intoxicated with illegal drugs during the same period.

But there is some good news. Drunk and/or drugged driving rates have dropped over the last few years. The number of self-reported drunk drivers fell from 14.6 percent in the 2002-2005 period to 13.2 percent from 2006 to 2009. Drugged driving fell from 4.8 to 4.3 percent during the same period.
