Wave the Flag on Memorial Day

Memorial Day parades let us light up with patriotism. All that's required is a choice viewing spot on the route, a camp chair and a flag to wave.

In Darien, the Memorial Day parade starts at 10 a.m. Monday, May 31, from Goodwives Shopping Center, moving along Brookside Road to the Post Road to Hecker Avenue where it ends with a ceremony at the Connecticut Veterans’ Cemetery.

Fairfield's parade on Monday, May 31, kicks off at 10 a.m. at the intersection of the Post Road and South Pine Creek. It moves along Main Street, passing the town green and concluding at South Benson Road. Retired U.S. Army Chaplain Frank E. Wismer II, gives an address following the parade at the American Legion Post 74 on Reef Road.

In New Canaan, the parade starts on the grounds of St. Mark's Episcopal Church at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, May 31. It travels along Main Street, ending at Lake View Cemetary with a ceremony. The parade's theme is to remember with gratitude those who died serving their country. All World War II veterans are grand marshalls.

Norwalk's Memorial Day parade on Monday, May 31, begins at 10 a.m. at Veteran's Park and moves along Van Zant Street to East Avenue to Norwalk Green. Grand Marshall is Phil Marzolf, who served with the Marines in Korea. Among the parade's marchers are Continental Army re-enacters, the CT 6th Regiment, who will be firing their muskets while marching.

Rowayton's parade kicks off at noon on Sunday, May 30, from the Rowayton Community Center. Great viewing spots can be had along Rowayton Avenue and McKinley Street. Those who died are to be honored in a ceremony at Veteran's Cannon at the parade's end.

Weston's parade is run by the Volunteer Fire Department and the Weston Select Committee for Veteran's Affairs. On Monday, May 31, with a 10:45 a.m. kick off, the parade's starts out from Weston High School and then proceeds to Town Hall.

Westport's Memorial Day parade starts on Riverside Avenue at 9 a.m. Monday, May 31 and crosses the Saugatuck River on the Ruth Steinkraus Memorial Bridge. It proceeds up Main Street, making its way to a service at Veteran's Green. Floats have a "Salute to the Defenders of Our Freedom" theme.

 On May 31 at 9 a.m., Wilton's Memorial Day parade starts on River Road and works its way down the street to Route 33. It ends at Hillside Cemetary with a presentation.
