Tours Shine Lanterns on History

Living history isn't an oxymoron on November 5 and 6, when patriots, tavern keepers, architects, traitors and other 18th and 19th century figures come to life, portrayed by costumed actors. They're part of the Keeler Tavern Museum's annual Lantern Light Tours, which guide visitors through the Museum's period rooms, with only a lantern to light the way. In each room, a vignette plays out, with the actors portraying notable residents of the building, from Benjamin Hoyt who built the Tavern in 1713 to famed 20th century New York City architect Cass Gilbert, who bought it as a country house in 1907.

Historical reincarnation continues on Sunday, November 7 at the Wilton Historical Society, when Gary Petagine channels Major General Benedict Arnold and Sean Grady becomes his colleague and co-conspirator, Major John Andre. Petagine and Grady are teachers who spent three years researching their program, "Rendezvous with Treason." In it they lay out their belief that Arnold's 230 year old reputation as a traitor is not the full story. “Arnold was probably our greatest Revolutionary War hero,” asserts Petagine. See if you agree when they present their program, accompanied by supper at the Historical Society from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Tickets are $35. Reservations are required and can be made by calling (203) 762-7257.  The Lantern Light Tours originate in the Keeler Museum's garden house every ten minutes from 7- 9:00 pm. Tickets are $5 and $15. Reservations are suggested and can be made at (203) 438-5485. Mulled cider and cookies will be served.
