Tom Chapin Means What He Sings

Singer-songwriter Tom Chapin is perpetually in creative motion, writing music, performing in concert, acting on TV and lending his name, talent and time to causes he cares about.  Earlier this year, for instance, with Pete Seeger, Michael Mark and Jan Phillips, he gave a concert to raise money for Haitian earthquake victims. Then, in June, he was the host of "Why Hunger," an event saluting individuals and groups working to end hunger and poverty.

Chapin is committed to teaching children ideas through music, and through other media. To that end, he has recorded 11 CDs for kids, as well as 10 for adults. He has written music for NPR and he appears in a PBS kid's show, "Lomax, the Hound of Music." An animated children's music video series is also being created from his work.

And there are the five new storybooks for kids Chapin is narrating. These include real stories that encourage young people to care for the environment and protect animals. They'll bring the series up  to 16. He's already banked 11 of them.

Luckily, this high-energy, multi-talented performer is making time in his chock-full calendar to perform at Westport's Levitt Pavilion, with his band, on July 28 in a free concert. It begins at 7 p.m. Given all he does, it might be more than just a good lyric when he sings, "Seems like I've been here before, can't remember when. I get this funny feeling, we'll be together again." Let's hope so. For more information on Tom Chapin's concert, visit the Levitt's website.
