"Titanic, The Musical" Launches in Stamford

The maiden voyage of the revolutionary 1912 ship, the Titanic, became one of the 20th centuries biggest disasters when the vessel hit an iceberg and sank and more than 1,000 people lost their lives. "Titanic, The Musical," on stage at Curtain Call from April 1-30, tells the stories of some of the ship's colorful characters, passengers and crew, prior to the loss of the "unsinkable" ship. The show was produced on Broadway in 1997, with a set that was extraordinarily sophisticated for its time, and because of its complexity, made out of town tryouts impossible. Nevertheless, "Titanic" became a hit and its creators, including composer-lyricist Maury Yeston and writer Peter Stone, won Tony Awards, with the show winning five in all including one for Best Musical.

As Yeston explains on his website, the show's story follows "actual characters aboard the great ship, [focusing] on their dreams, hopes and aspirations – as the story of the launching, the collision with the iceberg, and the sinking is played out against the background of the rigid class-distinctions of the Edwardian Age." The Spectactor (U.K.) called it "A triumph! A score which soars... a masterpiece" and The Hollywood Reporter said, "A grand, glorious, larger-than-life musical."  Book your own passage when Curtain Call launches its production, directed by Peter Barbieri, Jr. with musical direction by George Croom. Tickets are $14-$28. For more information, visit Curtain Call's website.
