The Play's the Thing (the Lunch, Too)

Are you an over-extended mom whose idea of cultural stimulation is an especially interesting episode of Sesame Street? Maybe all you need is to play with your food--and we don't mean your kid's leftover plate of mac n' cheese.

We're talking about the popular lunchtime theater series that pairs a catered meal with one-act plays, all in about 90 minutes. "It's only an hour-and-a-half, and you have to eat lunch anyway," says Nancy Diamond, founder and producer of Play With Your Food. "Might as well socialize and see some provocative theater at the same time!"

When Nancy and her partner, Carole Schweid, started the project they thought they'd get business people on their lunch breaks. Instead, they gets mostly moms whose kids are in school, people who work at home and some seniors. They lunch on buffets from top restaurants and caters, such as Garelick & Herbs and Abbondanza.

Onstage, you'll see both local actors and New York professionals. "It can be tricky with the New York actors, because often they have to dash out to another gig after their 15-minute part," Nancy says. Carole knows about schedules like that. She's one of the original cast members of "A Chorus Line" on Broadway.

Play With Your Food mounts productions in Westport, Fairfield, Greenwich and Newtown. This season's shows include "Knowing Best" by Michael McKeever and "A Minuet" by Louis N. Parker. Aspiring playwrights take note: Carole accepts submissions of one-act plays for consideration (email her at carole@playwithyourfood.org) Lunch is at noon; curtain time is 1 p.m. Ticket price: $42. For more info, call 203-226-2738.

And moms, we promise--none of one-acts star Big Bird or Cookie Monster.
