Taste "James and the Giant Peach"

British children's author Roald Dahl (1916-1990) frequently told interviewers he felt his books became popular because he "conspired with children against adults." Dip into "Charlie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory," "Matilda," or "The Big Friendly Giant," and you'll immediately know whose side you're on. The adults come off as irrational people who can also be downright mean. Children, on the other hand, are the compassionate and practical protagonists, but, understandably, unhappy ones.

At least, until something fantastic happens to them, as it often does in Dahl's stories. And "James and the Giant Peach," is top to bottom one of Dahl's most creative, fantastical stories. It was made into an animated film in 1996 and now, a talented group of theatre people have decided the time is ripe to turn it into a musical, produced at Goodspeed Opera House. Among them are Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, the youngest winners of the Jonathan Larson Award, who have written its score. They were also chosen as Dramatist Guild Fellows and wrote the music for the Disney Channel’s four-time Emmy nominated series, “Johnny and the Sprites.”  The book is by Timothy Allen McDonald, a playwright who also created stage versions of Roald Dahl's "Willy Wonka," Jim Henson's "Emmet Otter" and "The Musical Adventures of Flat Stanley."

Tony Award nominee Graciela Daniele is the director. Her Broadway work includes "Chita Rivera: The Dancer’s Life," "Once on This Island," and the 1999 revival of "Annie Get Your Gun."

The remarkable and innovative dance theater, Pilobolus, provides the show's choreography. With this talented line-up, "James and the Giant Peach" is undoubtedly a show worth tasting. It runs now through November 21 at the Goodspeed's Norma Terris Theatre in Chester. Tickets are $45.50. For more information, visit the Goodspeed's website.
