Sherlock Holmes Sets the Stage

If you had an acquaintance, colleague, neighbor or (gulp) father-in-law like Sherlock Holmes, you'd probably dread running into him or having to sit next to him at family dinners. Not warm and fuzzy, Holmes, Arthur Conan Doyle's brilliant fictional detective, is eccentric and remote. In Doyle's 19th century mysteries, the little we know about the enigmatic Holmes only whets our appetite for more nuggets about him and his stunning powers of deduction.

Doyle frist created Sherlock Holmes in his 1888 novel, "A Study in Scarlet." He couldn't have known what he unleashed. Ragingly popular at the time, Holmes has become a cult figure and his enduring popularity has meant continuous, new interpretations of Doyle's work. Most recently, Robert Downey Jr. played Holmes in director Guy Ritchie's 2009 film.

A new stage play, "Sherlock Holmes: The Final Adventure" is based on the original 1899 play by William Gillette and Arthur Conan Doyle. Adapted by Steven Dietz, it won the 2007 Edgar Award for Best Mystery Play. Phoenix New Times wrote, "Dietz's genius here is in creating both story and dialogue that could pass for Doyle's own. The playwright—who previously adapted Bram Stoker's Dracula and P.G. Wodehouse's Over the Moon to great effect—has created a gleeful whodunit that's both deeply original and an expert homage to all things Holmesian."  Playhouse on the Green presents "Sherlock Holmes: The Final Adventure" in a spirited production running from November 12 through 21. Baker Street Irregulars -- and civilians -- will get to see some new sides of the usually inscrutable Mr. Holmes. Performances take place Thursdays through Sundays. Tickets are $15-$20.
