See Behind the Scenes at the Aquarium

Discover how The Maritime Aquarium cares for and caters to its sharks, seals, river otters and hundreds of other aquatic species in a special “Behind-the-Scenes Tour.” You'll get to watch the animal husbandry staff accomodate its charges' picky preferences, about their food, water temperature and even companions. A few lucky visitors on the Saturday, August 21st tour, could help feed sharks or rays. By hand! (The rays, that is.)You'll also get a gander (and a nose-full) at the Aquarium’s “fish kitchen,” where 18 tons of fish food are prepared each year. It sits above the 110,000-gallon Open Ocean exhibit. That's where 7-foot sand tiger sharks glide by. You'll get their attention when you toss in a fish treat. Another tour highlight is the jellyfish "nursery."Last year, nearly 500,000 visitors explored the Maritime Aquarium's living animal exhibits, watched its IMAX movies, and participated in its programs. With 251 staff members at the ready, visitors learned, explored and investigated the world of Long Island Sound. The Aquarium's mission is to help preserve the Sound and inspire others to do the same. The "Behind the Scenes Tour" offers another way to see the scope of the Aquarium's work. The tour begins at 8:30 a.m. Participants must be at least 10 years old. Those under 15 must be accompanied by an adult. The cost is $30 and includes Aquarium admission at 10 a.m. Reservations are recommended. Walk-up tickets will be sold, space permitting. For reservations call The Maritime Aquarium at (203) 852-0700, ext. 2206.
