Before the Internet, Xbox and Wii, kids were captivated by puppet shows. Even today's tech-savvy tots will enjoy this retro-style entertainment when the Bruce Museum presents puppet permformances on Dec.12, as part of its Paper Theaters Family Day from 1 - 4 p.m. Jim Napolitano performs Santa Gets Fired: A Shadow Spectacular, a live (and topical!) puppet theater event that looks back over Santa's job history, before he found his niche at the North Pole. A five-part puppet miniseries, it's interactive (not computer generated) with novel features like shadow vignettes and silly songs.
Jim Napolitano, of Nappys Puppets in Milford, Conn., has performed around the world, including at The National Culture Center in Japan and The National Theater in Taiwan. His work can also be seen on the PBS show, Between The Lions.
The backdrop for the day is the Museum's exhibit, "A Childs View: 19th- Century Paper Theaters," on view through Jan. 30. It showcases the paper theaters and accompanying materials that European and American children were smitten with in the 19th century. The day also features a special gallery hunt through the exhibit, as well as a workshop for making paper-theater characters. Admission is $6 and $7. For more information, visit the Museum's website.
