NORWALK, Conn. -- A public forum exploring the economic and environmental impact of revitalizing the Manresa Island power plant property on Long Island Sound has been incorporated into the annual meeting of the Manresa Association scheduled for Wednesday, June 15, at the Shore & Country Club, 220 Gregory Blvd.

The evening will start with a 6 p.m. reception, followed by a series of presentations at 6:30.

Admission is free-of-charge.

Information provided at the forum will help determine what will be done with the plant, a mainstay of the area that was operational for more than half a century.

Originally coal-fired, the facility was ultimately converted to oil.

NRG Energy, which acquired the property from Connecticut Light and Power – now Eversource – in 1999, deactivated operations in May of 2013.

The upcoming meeting will include the review of an economic impact analysis assembled between the association and the City of Norwalk.

The review will be presented by the nonprofit’s president, Charlie Taney, with comments afterward by Mayor Harry Rilling.

The analysis will cover a number of scenarios.

A report by representatives of Connecticut’s Department of Energy and Environmental Protection and the Environmental Protection Agency outlining remediation plans for contaminated wetlands on the 125-acre property will follow.

Taney is also slated to deliver a report on the association’s accomplishments in the last year and priorities for 2016.

The meeting will conclude with a question-and-answer session.

Those who attend the meeting are reminded that the country club’s dress code requires collared shirts. Jeans or sneakers are not allowed.
