Pow, Punch, Zoom! Packs a Visual Wallop

The energy, color and in-your-face style of 60s and 70s Pop Art rockets into 2010 with The Loft Artists Association's exhibit, “Pow, Punch, Zoom!” Fifty years ago, when Pop Art came on the scene, it knocked people's socks off with its bright, bold colors and its elevation of everyday objects as subjects (think Andy Warhol's Brillo box paintings.) Pop Artists were rebelling against abstract-expressionism, then the dominant style. They thought it was snooty and so they dove into comic books, advertising and kitsch for inspiration. But love it or hate it, Pop Art is always compelling and "Pow, Punch, Zoom!" shoots for its own imaginative impact. "Art should be fun. This show is a perfect fit for my humorous and whimsical art," says Susan Frey, mixed media artist and show chairwoman.

Another contributing artist, Renee Kahn, reports, “I missed the entire sixties. While everyone else was partying and protesting, I was changing diapers and carpooling. NOW is my psychedelic era!”

Stop by the exhibit for your own jolt of Pop Art power. "Pow, Punch, Zoom!" runs from September 19 -- October 31. On opening day there is a free reception, from 2-5 p.m., with food, drinks and musical entertainment.

The Loft Artists Gallery is a non-profit organization, located in Stamford’s South End, at  845 Canal Street. Gallery hours are Friday-Sunday, 12-5 p.m. For more information, visit the gallery's website.
