On its Facebook page, organizers encouraged runners to “Just wear your running shoes, grab a friend and go!” There is even a badge for runners who participate that is available on the National Running Day website. Meetups were planned for 105 cities.
National Running Day has added significance this year. The last two major marathons in the United States, New York and Boston, have been significantly impacted by events.
New York was canceled for the first time in its long history last November due to the lingering effects of Superstorm Sandy. In April, two terrorists allegedly planted bombs near the finish line of the Boston Marathon. Three people died, numerous others were injured and many runners could not finish the race due to the bombings.
