Peabody Piques Curiosity

Now that the kids have dug their way through all the snow -- several times over --  jump in the car (the roads are clear!) and head to The Discovery Room at Yale's Peabody Museum for some terrific hands-on exploration and learning. Designed especially for kids five to twelve, the room is a funhouse of specimens, live animals, artifacts and scientific gewgaws, all presented in just the right way to pique the curiousity of slightly snow-dazed young visitors.

For instance, do you have an animal lover in your crew? Bet they'll pounce on the chance to find all 16 live poison dart frogs hiding in their habitat. (These fascinating little fellows, rapidly -- and mysteriously -- disappearing worldwide, were "captive bred" at the National Aquarium in Baltimore. Among them is the rare, blue poison dart frog, from Suriname.)

Or, jigsaw puzzle fans? They might roll up their sleeves and decide to meet the challenge of figuring out how to connect the bones of a rabbit. Junior archeologists can inspect and touch the 100 million year old fossil, or walk in dinosaur tracks. Everyone will want to watch the heavy lifting going on in the live, tropical leaf-cutter ant colony, where many jobs are underway and there is some unrivaled teamwork to behold.

And, afterwards, deep space fans will want to drop in to the Peabody's exhibit, "Black Holes: Space Warps and Time Twists," with its interactive experiences that define properties of black holes. For instance, an adventure game lets you step into an immersive excursion pod for a fantasy mission to see firsthand how black holes warp time and space. So, when you're ready for a few "Wows!" from your kids, The Peabody Museum has many, waiting. For more information, visit its website.
