Paula Poundstone Pummels with Laughs

Some gifts just can't be kept under wraps. Paula Poundstone's quick-witted humor, for instance, popped out in kindergarten. “I have enjoyed many of Paula’s humorous comments about our activities,” her teacher wrote.Poundstone's stand-up comedy, whether on HBO, “Saturday Night Live” or on stage, has brought her legions of amused and amazed fans.  So has her stint as a regular panelist on NPR's weekly news quiz program, "Wait, Wait ... Don't Tell Me,"  where her improvisation dazzles, as it does in all her appearances.Earlier this year, she told the Salt Lake City Deseret News, "My act is mostly autobiographical. I do talk about the news and politics. I'm not one of those people who is always right, though. I always go, 'I'm wrong about a hundred times, and guess what? The ceiling doesn't fall in.' "Her busy professional life could be one reason her 2006 book, "There’s Nothing In This Book That I Meant To Say,” took her eight years to write. Her three adopted children and 18 pets might have something to do with it too. But it hasn't all been laughs for Poundstone, who's talked openly about her alcoholism and her 2001 child endangerment conviction for driving under the influence with her kids on board.  After the incident, and rehab, she worked hard to recover her career.

Now fully back on course, this eclectic and thoroughly entertaining comedian performs a September 10 benefit for Homes with Hope, an organization fighting homelessness. The Boston Globe said about her, "You know Poundstone’s a great comic the way you know any fine performer when you see one -- there’s a disarming ease in her craft, an immediate sense that she’s so quick on her feet you need never worry about the possibility of something going wrong." Make your own assessment when she performs in the Third Annual Stand Up Comedy Night to benefit Homes with Hope, at The Levitt Pavilion. Her performance begins at 9 p.m. A pre-performance event is also available. Tickets are $45 and $100 and can be purchased at Homes with Hope's website or The Levitt Pavilion's.
