Othello Plays Outdoors

There's lots to know about Shakespeare's "Othello." For one thing, it's a tragedy. Also, the phrase, "wear your heart on your sleeve" originated in it. And there are those incredible words Shakespeare wrote, all 27,953 of them. (Someone counted.) But in Shakespeare on the Sound's current production, the creative talents who are staging "Othello" keep its brilliant essence while also reinventing this enduring classic.  Tony Award-winning singer-songwriter Stew, (who refers to Shakespeare as "Big Willy,") has provided original music and songs for it. Andrew Lieberman, head of set and film design at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts and a frequent collaborator with Stew, is the production's genius set designer. When he signed on, he said, "I look forward to devising an environment for Othello that in every way belongs to our location and the play's spirit."

Add Joanna Settle, Director, to the talent pool and you have enough creative energy to launch a rocket. Settle is beginning her second season with Shakespeare on the Sound. She is a Juilliard graduate who has directed many classic and modern works in productions around the country. "In Othello, we have the deepest possible look into the psyche of friendship, class, race and love," Settle said. Put this production of "Othello" outdoors and you have a summer experience that is sure to become its own kind of classic. And, it's free. The cast includes: Victor Williams as Othello; Jesse J. Perez as Iago and Stephanie Fieger as Desdemona. Shakespeare on the Sound's "Othello" is performed at Rowayton's Pinkney Park from June 15 to 26 and at Roger Sherman Baldwin Park in Greenwich, from July 2 to 11. Performances begin at 7:30 p.m. every night but Mondays. For more information, visit Shakespeare on the Sound's website.
