Opus One Adds Up Musically

No matter how you do the math, musical foursome, Opus One, is an equation for exceptional chamber music. On March 13, its highly regarded members, pianist Anne-Marie McDermott, violinist Ida Kavafian, violist Steven Tenenbom, and cellist Peter Wiley, give a Wilton Candlight Concert performance at 4 p.m. at the Wilton Congregational Church. Their program includes Beethoven's Piano Quartet in E-Flat Major, Op. 16, a work by composer Lowell Lieberman and the Dvo?ák Piano Quartet in E-Flat, Op. 87.Opus One's four star musicians came together as a group in 1998. Each already had dazzling careers as soloists and as players in renowned chamber music groups, including the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, Tashi, the Beaux Arts Trio, the Orion and Guarneri String Quartets. In joining forces as a new musical force, they hoped to bring the works of contemporary American composers to a wider audience. Another of their goals, as they say on their website, is to pass along some know-how to a new generation of musicians. "The members of Opus One are deeply committed to chamber music education and one of the innovative projects they have developed is workshops with amateurs as well as students."

As expected, given their caliber, there has been a torrent of praise for Opus One. The San Diego Union Tribune's glowing review was one of their first. "Opus One is just 8 months old... But my, how this baby can play. Opus One sang and soared, trilled and thrilled. Its sense of musical coordination was confident, its grasp of artistic subtleties, strong... there was a keen sense of teamwork and mutual support."

Be sure to catch Opus One at Wilton's Candlelight Concert on March 13. Their polish and passion are sure multiply any music lover's enjoyment. Tickets are $10 and $25. For information, visit the concert's website.
