Movie music can be mesmerizing. Take Stanley Kubrick's classic film "2001: A Space Odyssey." Its musical score blew the roof off, making an already revolutionary film an immediate sensation. But did you know a classical composer, Richard Strauss, wrote the film's signature music in 1896? And that the moving music of Steven Spielberg's "Schindler's List" or the memorable music in "Star Wars" or "The Adventures of Robin Hood" were also the work of serious composers? On May 15, these standout musical scores are performed by The Norwalk Symphony Orchestra in its season finale concert, "Classic Film Composers." Featured is music of Strauss, John Williams, Erich Korngold and more. Performing with the symphony are choral students of Darien and New Canaan High Schools. The concert begins at 8 p.m. at Norwalk Concert hall. Tickets are $10-$50. Music Director and Conductor Dianne Wittry gives a pre-concert lecture which begins at 7 p.m.
The following evening, May 16, celebrate the NSO's 70th Anniversary Gala from 4-7 p.m. at the elegant Meigas Restaurant in Norwalk. Tickets are $70 a person and include a hearty tapas feast and the chance to capture wonderful symphony memorabilia in the evening's silent auction.
