Norwalk River's Cleaning Up

Volunteers of all ages are needed to remove trash from the Norwalk River at the Trout Unlimited - Mianus Chapter’s annual spring clean-up -- scuba gear not required! The clean-up starts at 9 a.m. on April 24th, and will cover the area between Wilton's Merwin Meadows and School Road. In previous clean-ups, a truckload of trash--between 500 and 1,000 pounds of the stuff--was pulled out. Board member Tony Hill (see him in front with the tire at the 2009 clean-up) says their big finds last year were a refrigerator and a truck axel, along with the predictable soda cans, tires and plastic bags. The six-year-old Mianus Chapter also takes on bank stabilization, using old Christmas trees, and sponsors a summer Special Olympics fishing derby at the pond at Merwin Meadows. Volunteers for the river cleanup will meet at Wilton's Merwin Meadows parking lot, at the end of Lovers Lane. Afterward, you can gear up and go fishing. Be sure to take pictures of the strangest trash you come across and send them to us! For more information and to sign up, contact Jeff Yates, at jyates@mianustu.org or 203-216-7078.
