NORWALK, Conn. --The city of Norwalk will continue its tradition of celebrating both National Poetry Month and Jazz Appreciation Month with a citywide celebration at the Main Library on Friday, April 1.

Mayor Harry Rilling will introduce Norwalk’s first Poet Laureate who will share original poetry. Norwalk’s own Jim Clark will present “What is Jazz”.

The following Friday, April 8, the library will host the second annual Evening of Jazz and Poetry at the Norwalk Inn. This “date night” event is hosted by local musician and writer Neddy Smith. Smith and company provide the jazz and Norwalk Notables will read their own favorite poems.

On Sunday, April 10 Emily Dickinson will visit the main library to share her life and work with a Monday.

On Monday, April 11 there will be a celebration of Norwalk Fair Housing’s 30th anniversary and the 48th anniversary of the Fair Housing Act, the Forgotten Civil Right with Jazz and Poetry in City Hall’s Community Room. This event will feature Rilling, Darnell Crosland, Esq., president of the Norwalk NAACP, Mike Camacho and Friends Jazz Band, and the Norwalk Next Generation Chorus, plus some young poets.

All month long there will be a special sale of poetry books in the new Friends’ Bookshop in the Main Library. Norwalk Transit buses will have poetry on each bus thanks to the Poet Laureate and the Norwalk Arts Commission, and April 21 is Poem in your Pocket Day.
